A love story a thousand years in the telling

Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai is a classic folk love story. Zhu Yingtai was born in an age when women could not go to school. She dressed as a man to study away from home, and there she and her fellow student Liang Shanbo became true companions. After she returned, her family held her to a marriage arranged long before. When Liang Shanbo heard of it, grief took him and he died. On the day of the wedding, Zhu Yingtai stopped at his grave. The earth split open, and she leapt in. In the end the two turned into a pair of butterflies, flying side by side, together at last.《梁山伯與祝英台》是經典的民間愛情故事。

Three pieces, three parts of the story

I divided the story into meeting, longing, and reunion, expressed through a ring, a hairpin, and a brooch. Where each piece is worn matters to the story as much as its form.

The ring piece, shown from a low rear angle, with a small pearl set in the center of a butterfly form.

The meeting, in a ring.
It stands for the years the two of them studied side by side. The form opens outward from a center, tracing a bond just taking root, and the first stretch of time spent in each other’s company.

The hairpin piece, shown straight on, with a moonstone set into the head and a long curved tine.

Longing, as a hairpin.
Half hidden in the hair, the piece occupies a more private place on the body. I chose it to suggest the longing the two lovers carry quietly after parting.

The butterfly brooch, shown from a low angle, with finely textured wings and a moonstone at the center.

The reunion, in a brooch.
It stands for the final turn into butterflies. Two butterflies overlap, and where they cross they become one body, an ending whole enough to say: you within me, and I within you.

Before the casting, a prototype in wax

All three began as wax cut by hand, the outline of a feeling worked out slowly. Those prototypes vanish in the heat of the casting. They trade their own disappearance for permanence in metal.
